Values Lesson Activities

Steps 1 and 2:

Values Video
As a class, brainstorm the meaning of "value" and then view the video "Acting on Your Values" from Bureau for At-Risk Publication. After viewing video, discuss with students their values, and how their values affect the decisions they make. Make a list of values identified by students on chart or board. [LANGUAGE] (Level 0.0 - 8.9)

Note: Steps 1 and 2 are a prerequisite for the other lesson activities, but the remaining activities can be done individually as needed.

Step 3A:

Discussion of "The Wallet" Story
Read enclosed story to the class about "The Wallet". Have students imagine that they are in that situation while you are reading. Discuss reactions. [READING] (Level 0.0 - 8.9)

Step 3B:

Values House
Individually or in small groups, have students fill in an outline picture of a house with the values they feel are important. Share with class. [READING] (Level 0.0 - 8.9)

Step 3C:

Values Tree
Individually or in small groups, using image of a large tree, have students draw tree and fill in values that are important to them. Share with class. [LANGUAGE] (Level 0.0 - 8.9)

Step 4:

Values Chart and Readings
Display enclosed Values Chart and discuss with students. Read several of the enclosed selections to the class, or use pertinent newspaper articles which deal with values. Elicit discussion about each of the selections: What are the values dealt with in the story? How do those values affect the decisions of the characters in the story? Allow students to identify vocabulary words they desire to learn from the selections and discussions. Write words on chalkboard. Discuss meanings. [READING and LANGUAGE] (Level 4.0 - 8.9)

Step 5A:

Values Vocabulary
Students (individually or in groups) learn chosen vocabulary words by looking them up in the dictionary, then use the words in sentences. [READING and LANGUAGE] (Level 4.0 - 8.9)

Steps 5B, 5C:

Values and Decisions
Students read selections about values from materials provided or newspaper articles which relate to values, sharing reactions and finding relation of values to decisions. [READING and LANGUAGE] (Level 6.0 - 8.9)

Step 5D:

Choices Game
Students play enclosed game about making choices. [READING and LANGUAGE] (Level 6.0 - 8.9)

Steps 6, 7, 8:

Creative Activities based on Stories
Selecting a story which they have read, individuals or groups choose one (or several) of 8 creative activities to do based on the values in the story. One group or individual shares creation with another, receiving feedback, then students refine their creations through group or self-evaluation. Finally, groups and individuals share final products with entire class. [READING and LANGUAGE] (Level ??? - ???)
