Title: Writing in the Mathematics Classroom - Explanation and Evaluation
Contributor: Fanny Sosenke, ASCD Classroom Leadership Conference July 1999. Contact info: fsosenke@parktudor.pvt.k12.in.us
Materials: Pencil, paper and one math problem, Explanation and Evaluation worksheet
Procedure:

The worksheet can be used to check comprehension for any math problem. After the worksheet is completed it can be read by other students working on the same math area and used as a teaching tool. Students who read the writing should evaluate it based on the criteria outlined under "Guide to Completing the Problem."

Excellent student explanations and evaluations may be compiled in a help book to be used by struggling students or students who need to catch up from absences.
