Square |
A rectangle having two adjacent sides of equal length. It can be shown that all four sides have the same length.
Hypotenuse |
The longest side of a plane right triangle; the side of a plane right angle triangle opposite the right angle.
| Trapezoid |
A quadrilateral with two, and only two, opposite sides parallel.
| Diagonal |
A line segment connecting two non-adjacent vertices of a polygon.
Altitude |
A line segment whose one endpoint is the vertex of a polygon and whose other endpoint intersects the side opposite the vertex, called the base. The altitude is perpendicular to the base.
Triangle |
A closed plane figure with three sides. Triangles are classified by the relationship of the sides (e.g. isosceles) or by the measure of the angles (e.g. acute).
| Isosceles Triangle |
A triangle in which two sides have the same measure.
| Right Triangle |
A triangle, one of whose angles is a right angle.
| Right Angle |
An angle of 90 degrees.
Vertex of a Polygon |
The point of intersection of any two adjacent sides of the polygon.
| Acute Angle |
Any angle whose measure is greater than 0 degrees but less than 90 degrees.
| Obtuse Angle |
Any angle whose measure is greater than 90 degrees but less than 180 degrees.
Base of a geometric figure |
In a triangle, the side opposite the vertex angle is called the base of the triangle. Many geometric figures have sides or portions of planes as their bases.
